Introduction: The Poppy Phenomenon on the Alternative Scene

Poppy (real name — Moriah Rose Pereira) is an American performer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has managed to make one of the most unexpected genre transitions in contemporary music. Beginning her career as a mysterious internet phenomenon and pop singer, she gradually transformed her work, becoming a notable figure in the worlds of alternative rock, industrial metal, and metalcore. Her unique artistic style is built on contrasts: a cute visual image is combined with heavy guitar sound, aggressive vocals, and dark lyrics.

Early Years and the Formation of Her Creative Path

Moriah Rose Pereira was born on January 1, 1995, in Boston, Massachusetts. At a young age, she moved with her family to Nashville, Tennessee. The atmosphere of this musical city had a certain influence on her, but her main source of inspiration was her father, who played drums in a punk band. From an early age, Moriah was passionate about dance, dreamed of performing with the famous dance troupe the Rockettes, and even trained professionally for eleven years.

Her school years proved difficult: due to problems communicating with peers and frequent bullying, she switched to homeschooling at the age of 16. Music became therapy for her and a way to cope with isolation. Around the age of 13 or 14, Moriah began writing her first songs, drawing inspiration from Blondie, No Doubt, Marilyn Manson, and Nine Inch Nails. Soon afterward, she decided to move to Los Angeles to devote herself to art.

The YouTube Era and the Conceptual Pop Project

In 2014, Moriah began collaborating with director and musician Titanic Sinclair. Together, they created a unique internet project under the pseudonym That Poppy (later shortened to Poppy). Short surreal videos began appearing on YouTube, in which the singer portrayed an emotionless android with a doll-like voice and unnatural movements. The video titled “I am Poppy,” in which she monotonously repeats her own name for 10 minutes, gained millions of views and gave rise to numerous fan conspiracy theories.

At that time, the project’s musical component matched its visual style. The EP Bubblebath (2016), as well as her debut full-length album Poppy.Computer (2017), were created in the style of glossy electropop and bubblegum pop. However, her second LP, Am I a Girl? (2018), already showed the first signs of impending change. The album’s final tracks, such as “Play Destroy” (recorded with singer Grimes) and “X,” surprised audiences with abrupt shifts from sweet vocals to an aggressive nu-metal sound.

A Turning Point: “I Disagree” and the Heavier Sound

In late 2019, Poppy officially ended her professional relationship with her former collaborator, taking full control of her creative direction. The result of this independence was the album “I Disagree”, released in January 2020 on Sumerian Records. The record marked the artist’s definitive move into the realm of heavy music.

The blend of industrial rock, alternative metal, and pop melodies received high praise from critics. The single “Bloodmoney” earned Poppy a historic Grammy nomination in the category of Best Metal Performance at the 63rd ceremony. She became the first female solo artist ever to be nominated in this category. Another notable event during this period was the release of her cover of t.A.T.u.’s hit “All The Things She Said,” which was warmly received by Eastern European audiences.

Further Evolution: From Grunge to “Empty Hands”

Poppy has consistently refused to rest on her achievements, regularly changing her musical direction. In 2021, she released the album Flux, recorded under the guidance of producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen. The sound of this record shifted toward ’90s grunge, shoegaze, and classic alternative rock, demonstrating a more “live” instrumental approach.

Subsequent releases continued the experimentation. The album Zig (2023) combined dark electro-pop and industrial music, while Negative Spaces (November 2024) marked the beginning of her collaboration with British producer Jordan Fish (former keyboardist of Bring Me The Horizon). This partnership brought her sound to a new level of heaviness, merging elements of modern metalcore and electronics.

In January 2026, Poppy presented her seventh studio album, “Empty Hands”, also produced by Jordan Fish. The new record demonstrated a deep dive into metalcore and extreme vocals, revealing personal and vulnerable themes in its lyrics. In support of this release, the singer embarked on a world tour, including the Australian “Constantly Nowhere” tour dates in early 2026.

Collaborations with prominent representatives of the metal scene have become an important part of her career. These include the joint track “V.A.N” with Bad Omens (2024), the successful Grammy-nominated single “Suffocate” with Knocked Loose (2024), as well as the three-way single “End of You” (2025) featuring Amy Lee (Evanescence) and Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox).

Poppy Quotes

“I don’t like the idea of genre boundaries. If art is sincere, it doesn’t matter what instruments it’s performed with — an acoustic guitar or heavy distorted synthesizers.”

“My persona at the beginning was a way to protect myself from the outside world and, at the same time, an opportunity to explore how technology changes human communication.”

“Creating music for me is a constant process of self-discovery. I’m not afraid to make mistakes or change my sound, because stagnation for an artist is worse than any failure.”
